Have you ever wondered what happens in the African bush at night? This is your opportunity to find out!
Spend 4 nights in an underground photography hide at Shompole in Kenya. You will capture images of rare nocturnal species and the abundance of other wildlife that visits the waterhole at night. The lighting system offers the opportunity to experiment with backlight (great when dust is kicked up), side light (perfect for dramatic low-key contrasty shots) and front light (for when you want to see the detail of your subject).
Entering the photographic hide each day at around 4pm, and leaving at around 7.30am means you will also be there for sunset and sunrise, offering the possibility of combining warm golden hour sunlight with dust being kicked up by animals as they come to drink - it's a beautiful combination.
On my last visit, I saw genet, civet, a family of bat-eared fox, white-tailed mongoose, striped hyena, spotted hyena, vast numbers of plains game, giraffe, baboons, many species of birds including verreaux’s eagle owl (the largest owl in Africa), and had a number of visits from three large bull elephants - one of which had some of the most impressive tusks I’ve seen. There is also the possibility of lions and leopard, and on rare occasions, caracal - although obviously we are at the mercy of nature.
The photographic potential in the hides is like nowhere else. The low angle and being just meters away from your subject guarantees you will return with a portfolio of truly amazing images.
Time will be split between 2 hides - the plains hide, and the bush hide. Each offers something different. The plains hide being out in the open, attracts larger species, while the bush hide is more suited to the smaller nocturnal species that would rather not be out in the open.
If you’re looking for a truly one of a kind experience, this is it!
